This book was written and later edited .. I OWN the Self Realization ( approx 1600 pages ) Fellowship 2 volume hard cover, edited edition. This book is a ruse by Donald Walters aka Kriyananda. This man was once a member of SRF in a position of power. He abused that power and was asked to leave SRF. I know a devotee who gave me the inside story on Donald Walters . The short story is this quote. My friend said of Donald Walters, 'he took 10 years off of Daya Ma's life'. Regardless if this is literally true or not... I doubt it is literally true... these words sum up the negativity Donald Walters and his org, brought to SRF. One feature of the legal battles between Walters and SRF pertains to Donald Walters using Yogananda's name PARAMHANSA , when Yogananda signed his name he would leave out one of the A's... spelling it PARAM-HANSA . You will notice Kriyananda's publications use the name Paramhansa not the SRF version Paramahansa. When I buy Yogananda books, I want the SRF edited versions, for two reasons. I do not wish to support Donald Walter's org. And I want the latest edited versions. The Second Coming of Christ which I own is perhaps the greatest book on Christ ever written.. When I bought the fradualently titled version - The Second Coming...." I was fooled because the TITLE OF YOGANANDA"S name is Paramahansa. This is dirty business and I want no part of it. Amazon quickly refunded the $9,95 and removed the book.
A must read for anyone on the spiritual path can read. As someone who grew up wih Christianity but then later strayed away from it due to the church system (Church-ianity), this book did an amazing job reconnecting me with the teachings of Jesus at a point where I am now ready and receptive to hear what he was actually teaching (why Jesus spoke in parables is explained in the book as well). Yogananda provides a perfect break down and description of the teachings of Jesus. Also shows all the parallel teachings with other teachings as well as points out many scientific references documenting what Yogananda was teaching at that time that have since been discovered. This book is life changing while also being entertaining and is hard to put down. I put this book right up there with the Bhagavad Gita.
Paramahansa Yogananda has become my favorite author and guru. I am a minister yet i am learning so much from this and his other books. And they are validating things that i knew intuitively when i was a little girl. Everything is possible. Everyone, no matter what religion you follow, can benefit from his books. Wish i had known him. I actually give this 10 stars. The footnotes alone are worth gold.
I grew up in Christianity and was deeply attached to Jesus as child, but then the politics of religion took over and I became very turned off and away from anything which had to do with Christianity and Christians. I went on a search and took up various other eastern religions and philosophies and they did bring more of an inner transformation, but still left me with the longing to know Jesus a bit more. Then I came across this book and it seems that many years of searching for answers had to be answered by someone who wasn't a Christian. After reading these discourses I am deeply in love with Christianity and Jesus, like I was when I was a child. This book could bring about profound unity among all peoples and religions, if read with an open heart and mind.
This is a detailed commentary on the Christian gospels, giving the primary position to the Gospel of John (appropriately). Some other commentaries give a lot of detail regarding the various early manuscripts of these documents and what we know about the writers and the times in which they were written. That kind of commentary often does little indeed for a person who wants to know what the scripture means and how our own lives ought to change in light of that scripture. So, we could say that most commentaries do not represent "engineering theology" as I think they should. It is true that some more recent commentaries do have a more pastoral "what does it mean" character.Unique in all the literature, this is an explanation of the very detailed meaning of the scripture given by a person known to be a very high level and accomplished mystic, a person of stature, of expertise of that kind. So, it would be a poor idea to dismiss this book quickly. The author claims to have met with Jesus in mystical vision and to have had from Jesus Himself explanations of these true meanings. That would not be credible for me, but, then, I am not a great mystic. It is, of course, possible for him. Mystics can have that sort of experience, no doubt about it---and that's for sure.Many of the detailed explanations of comments of this book are unexpected, even to a person who has studied religious matters seriously for a long time. On several points, it does disagree with the usual teachings of standard Christian Churches, including my own church. An individual person would have no particularly good way to choose which teaching would be correct, but it is, I think, very useful to see this interpretation or teaching. In the end, the author claims that Jesus' true, core teaching is fully consistent with the Bhagavad Gita, and that it re-iterates, in esoteric ways, the path to spiritual growth that is often known as Raja Yoga in the east. So, the suggestion is that Jesus was teaching something equivalent to Raja Yoga as the right way for development.This is not wholly satisfactory, since this book doesn't tell exactly how the recommended practice would be done. For that, other works would be required. It isn't really possible for an uninitiated person to know clearly whether or not this esoteric meaning is real. It is good notification, and it is an idea worth considering. Still, it would be difficult to know for myself just whether or not it is true. I would like to see for myself, to know for myself.My own opinion is that some aspect of the message of Jesus has been omitted or slightly distorted in the teaching I have received from standard sources. If that were not so, I would expect that the lives of all the people sincerely trying to follow Jesus as the Way would display in their own lives very great presence and working of the Holy Spirit. I would expect that many would find the experience "I and the Father are One." It doesn't really appear that many do. So, something seems to have gone a little wrong. Maybe this, that Paramahamsa Yogananda is saying, might be the missing piece. I don't know---and still don't have a good way to find out. Still, it is a unique insight and may be helpful.
